My apologies for not keeping up with this blog a little better this week.
The posts will be more consistent as I fully learn the ropes at the Daily News, and they’ll of course be very constant once the WKU women’s basketball team – my primary beat – begins play.
This week takes me all over the high school sports landscape. I’ll have covered volleyball, soccer, football and golf by the team it’s all said and done, but that definitely makes for an interesting week.
I covered Warren East volleyball’s win over Warren Central on Tuesday night, which included an exciting second set. After trailing 22-19, the Lady Raiders took a timeout and rallied with six straight points to clinch the win.
Both Warren East coach Brian Griffing and senior Kara England told me they feel like the team is peaking at the right time. The Lady Raiders welcome Bowling Green for a District 14 match tonight.
Warren Central plays at South Warren tonight as well. Greenwood doesn’t play again until the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament this weekend.
Speaking of Greenwood, the Lady Gators were ranked 11th in the state in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association top-25 poll released yesterday.
The KVCA also ranks each region, and the top five teams in Region 4 were Greenwood, Edmonson County, Bowling Green, Logan County and Warren Central. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Warren East there before too long if the Lady Raiders keep up their improved play.
But even with all that volleyball action tonight, I’ll be out at “the Pit” for some boys’ soccer. Bowling Green, which comes in at 8-0-2 and just won a co-championship in the Purples Classic last weekend, hosts South Warren at 7 p.m.
The Spartans are currently 4-3-1.
And it wouldn’t be a late-week post without some football. I’ll be covering the Daily News’ game of the week, which is Greenwood hosting Franklin-Simpson at 7 p.m. Friday.
My preview of all of the week’s local games was printed in today’s edition.
I’ll have plenty more on Greenwood-Franklin-Simpson on the blog tomorrow, including some preview stuff from F-S coach Tim Schlosser that didn’t make print deadline. I’ll also have some reaction (and hopefully video) after the game.
