District finals aplenty tonight

As long as the rain doesn’t interfere with planned soccer matches, three local district championships will be decided tonight.

The title games of both the boys’ and girls’ District 7 soccer tournaments are slated for 6 p.m. starts, and the District 14 volleyball final will also take place tonight.

I’ve  been covering the District 7 boys all week, and I’ll be at the Bowling Green Soccer Complex again tonight as Warren Central tries to keep Bowling Green from winning its sixth straight district title.

The Dragons advanced by beating South Warren in a fantastic match last night, 2-1.

The match was knotted until the 57th minute, when junior Dino Ferinovic scored the go-ahead goal.

That was as tense a match as I’ve covered in a long time, compounded by the fact that both teams were playing to keep their seasons alive.

It was an emotional loss for second-year team South Warren, which had won its first postseason game in program history the day before.

“We still have a lot of returners coming back,” South Warren coach Tom Alexander said after the match. “We’re still very young. I’m excited for our future. We’re starting to understand what runs to make and how to get the ball there. Now it’s a matter of executing it in games.”

Bowling Green beat Warren Central 3-0 in the regular season, and the Purples also beat WC by the same score in last year’s district final. Both teams have already earned a spot in next week’s Region 4 Tournament.

In the girls’ tournament, Micheal Compton will have coverage of South Warren’s attempt to upset top-seeded Bowling Green at Franklin-Simpson High School.

Bowling Green is the only school involved in all of the district finals tonight, as the Lady Purples volleyball team will also challenge Greenwood for the District 14 title. I can’t remember off-hand what exactly the Lady Gators’ district win streak is up to, but it’s definitely in the 80s at this point.

A win over Greenwood would be a massive, massive upset for BG. You can find coverage of that match in tomorrow’s Daily News as well.
