Towson 67, Lady Toppers 62 – Final

Final: The Lady Toppers drop their second straight season opener in Diddle Arena with a 67-62 loss.

WKU shot 32.9% from the field, and Owens and Mosley were a combined 7 of 24 from the field.

The Lady Toppers turned the ball over 21 times, which turned into 24 Towson points. WKU made 6 of 11 3-pointers in the second half and outrebounded Towson 51-31 for the game.

Alexis Govan and Danay Fothergill made the biggest impact off the bench. Govan finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, although she was 3 of 12 from the field.

Fothergill had 9 points with three 3-pointers.

Mosley had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Owens finished with 7 points and 12 rebounds.

3:58, 2nd: The Lady Toppers are down 56-54 with less than four minutes to play. Towson has just four fouls so far.

6:58, 2nd: WKU fell behind by seven, but three straight 3-pointers by the Lady Toppers have tied this one at 52-52.

WKU is outrebounding Towson 41-23. Mosley and Owens each have 10 rebounds.

11:29, 2nd: The Lady Toppers still can’t find any traction, down six with 11:29 to play.

After starting 2 of 15 from 3-point range, WKU has looked a little gun-shy, passing up several open looks on the perimeter.

Today’s official attendance is 948.

15:42, 2nd: Towson has its largest lead of the afternoon at 41-36. The Lady Toppers have 14 turnovers, which Towson has converted into 18 points.

Halftime: Well, one thing’s certain – the Lady Toppers’ defense has a long way to go.

Towson shot 50% in the first half, including making 4 of 6 3-pointers. Towson guard Meredith Kennedy made 4 of 4 3s in that half, leading all scorers with 12 points.

Senior forward Keshia Mosley leads WKU with 10 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Tops had seven players play at least six minutes.

WKU outrebounded Towson 28-13. Freshman Alexis Govan continues to be a bright spot, pulling down five rebounds in 12 minutes.

The Lady Toppers shot 32.4% in the first half. They were 1 of 13 from 3-point range, many of those quick shots out of transition. WKU has looked at its best when it plays a strong halfcourt game and moves the ball.

We’ll see if they try to work on that in the second half and get the post more touches.

3:54, 1st: WKU is holding on to a small lead at 29-27, but the Lady Tops are only shooting 34.5% from the field, while Towson is shooting 51%.

WKU is doing well on the boards, outrebounding Towson 21-10.

7:17, 1st: WKU has got back into it with strong defensive pressure. The Lady Tops got a good stretch from Fothergill, who took a charge and then nailed a 3-pointer.

The Lady Tops are 1 of 9 from 3-point range, after taking just five 3s in last Sunday’s exhibition win.

11:50, 1st: The Lady Toppers have allowed Towson toH shoot 45.5% from the field thus far. LaTeira Owens has an early 4 points and 4 rebounds.

14:09, 1st: WKU trails Towson 9-6 at the first media timeout. The Lady Toppers have made just 2 of their first 9 shots. Fothergill, Gooch, Govan and Johnson all into the game now.

Pregame: WKU’s starters for this one are the same as Sunday’s exhibition: G Chaney Means, G Vanessa Obafemi, F Teranie Thomas, F LaTeira Owens and F Keshia Mosley.

It feels like a very long time ago that I visited the Western Kentucky women’s basketball team’s second practice of the season, and well, it was a long time ago.

It’s been more than a month since the Lady Toppers started practice, but they’ll finally hit the court for their regular season opener at 4 p.m. today, when they host Towson in E.A. Diddle Arena.

Towson finished 9-21 last season, but the Tigers return five seniors, including three starting guards.

Point guard Krystal Parnell averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 assists last season. Sheree Ledbetter and Deree Fooks each averaged more than eight points per game.

Towson’s five forwards are all 6 feet 1 inch or taller, led by North Carolina transfer Nyree Williams.

As I did last Sunday against Kentucky Wesleyan, I’ll write a few updates here on this blog at each media timeout. But if you want more immediate updates, be sure to follow me at http://www.twitter.com/zach_greenwell.
