It’s impossible to escape talk of Western Kentucky’s men’s basketball coaching search these days, even at the Hilltoppers’ baseball Opening Day.
WKU president Gary Ransdell provided color commentary for the Hilltoppers’ season opener on the diamond against Toledo, and during his time in the press box, he was asked by play-by-play man Scott Thompson about the basketball coaching search.
Ransdell said the WKU administration could make a permanent decision for the next head coach as early as next week, saying he and athletic director Ross Bjork would like to have it “wrapped up quickly.”
Ransdell said he was impressed by the job interim coach Ray Harper is doing, and that he’d like to see the search committee make a decision before the Sun Belt Tournament so that the team has an “idea of where this is heading.”
Bjork was also in the press box, and confirmed to me that WKU has narrowed its list of coaching candidates to a final group. I asked him if a hire could happen as early as next week, and Bjork said no one wanted to put a rigid deadline on the decision.
“We want to do it when the time is right,” Bjork said. “You obviously want to create as much buzz as possible with that news.”
