In honor of the Western Kentucky women’s basketball team’s first day of practice today, I give you a couple of recruiting updates from over the weekend.
First, WKU has offered 6-foot-4 2013 center Tearra Banks from Ballard High School in Louisville.
Armond Wilson, Banks’ AAU coach with the Kentucky Lady Retros, confirmed the offer Sunday.
WKU coach Michelle Clark-Heard watched Banks play four games over the weekend with the Lady Retros at the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee and then offered the post a scholarship, Wilson said.
“She said she was really interested in her ability, her upside, her attitude and her focus on the game,” he said.
Banks also holds offers from Long Island, Fisk University and Kentucky State, Wilson said.
“After talking to Tearra, I get the sense that this is what she’s been waiting on,” he said.
Banks sat out last season after transferring to Ballard from Shawnee High School. She’ll play at Ballard with junior forward Javonna Layfield, who’s also a WKU target.
“She has great hands and moves well around the basket,” Wilson said of Banks. “For her size, she runs the floor well. She has a nice, soft mid-range jump shot.”
WKU has two verbal commits in the 2013 class – Paul Laurence Dunbar guard Kierra Muhammad and Bloom Township (Ill.) center Bria Gaines. The Lady Toppers have two scholarship remaining.
