The Western Kentucky women’s basketball team didn’t take long to fill its final scholarship.
Two days after officially announcing three signees in the 2013 class, the Lady Toppers on Friday added Ruta Savickaite, a 6-foot-4-inch center from Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Keisha Hunt, Savickaite’s coach at Hamilton Heights, confirmed the commitment.
Savickaite came to Hamilton Heights in January from Lithuania. WKU assistant coach Greg Collins originally noticed the center as an assistant at Arkansas and returned to recruit her once he joined the Lady Toppers’ staff, Hunt said.
“She and her host family have visited Western Kentucky,” Hunt said. “She really likes the coaches and loved the campus. She’s really excited about being there and having the decision out of her mind so she can just focus on her senior year.”
Hamilton Heights has won five straight National Association of Christian Athletes national championships.
Savickaite averaged 5.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 17 games as a junior.
“She is really strong and physical,” Hunt said. “Her nickname is Ruta Balboa like ‘Rocky.’ She doesn’t fight in the game, but she’s so physical and bruises people up. She’s a really smart player. She can come out and shoot, but her power is inside in the paint.”
Savickaite joins guards Kierra Muhammad, forward Aleeya Harris and center Bria Gaines in WKU’s 2013 recruiting class, which now includes three players 6-1 or taller.
The Lady Toppers have filled all their available scholarships and have no seniors this season.
