Postgame: Lady Tops survive for 64-61 win at Florida Atlantic

The WKU women’s basketball team improved to 18-6 and 11-4 in Sun Belt Conference play with a 64-61 win Wednesday at Florida Atlantic.

Here are postgame comments via phone from coach Michelle Clark and guards Chaney Means and Alexis Govan:

MICHELLE CLARK-HEARD, coach

“This team showed resilience. We made a ton of mistakes, but when it counted, we stepped up. We played as a group and found a way to win, and to be a good team, that’s what you have to do. We grew up tonight.”

On Gooch’s early foul trouble: “I knew I had to put Chastity back in or we were going to fall too far behind. She kept playing and didn’t get in a situation to get more fouls and have to sit.”

Getting good minutes from reserves, including walk-on Ciera Woods: “We’ve been trying and trying to get Ciera in shape and get her confident enough. She did some good things. Her presence is something we have had in a while, size-wise. Everybody that came off the bench gave us some quality minutes.”

Gooch finding Govan out of double teams: “This team’s chemistry and the way they look for each other is what I really love. Chastity didn’t have a double-double, but she had three huge assists for Alexis when she got double-teamed. It’s awesome that they know to get the hot hand the ball.”

What was the plan defensively when FAU had the ball down 3 with six seconds left? “The plan was to double the inbounds and then foul so that we didn’t give up the 3.”

CHANEY MEANS, junior guard

On road win: “We haven’t won here since I’ve been at Western. It’s hard to come to Florida and get these wins, so that was a good start to our road trip.”

On Gooch and Govan in foul trouble: “We knew we had to step up. We hung in there in the first half and tried to make a run so we’d be in it when we got Chastity and Alexis back.”

Means’ play lately: “Coach challenged me to be that X-factor and do the little things the team needs. I know for this team, that’s rebounding and passing to the girls that can fill it up.”

First game against FIU? “We put a lot of pressure on them, and we didn’t let their size get to our heads. We’ve got to do that again. That win gave us a boost in conference play, and another one would be huge.”

ALEXIS GOVAN, sophomore guard

What were you thinking when Gooch went out? “Not again. Not foul trouble again. But when she came back in, she stepped it up and you wouldn’t even know she had two fouls.”

Scoring 31: “My teammates always seem to find me. They just tell me to move off the ball a lot. Chastity gets double teams, but she passes it really well. She looks to the spot, and I just go wherever her eyes go.”

First game against FIU: “That game was so early, but the thing that sticks out in my memory is that we played with a lot of energy.”
