Heard previews first-round WNIT game against East Carolina

WKU coach Michelle Clark-Heard met with the media today to preview Thursday’s home game in the first round of the WNIT against East Carolina at 7 p.m. at E.A. Diddle Arena.

Here are her thoughts on getting a postseason bid, having the chance to host and ECU:

Getting a postseason bid: “When the whole bracket came out, and you saw the opportunity with all the different teams that are in the tournament, it’s a real big deal for us. The biggest thing for us is to be able to play again in the postseason, which Western Kentucky hasn’t had that for the past two years.”

Telling players: “It’s not like the selection show. They weren’t sitting around. They had to wait for my phone call or my text. Making the phone calls to them was a big deal for me, because we talked about having the possibility – even when we lost in the Sun Belt tournament – that we could still be playing.”

What you get out of extra games: “What we’re trying to look at is tournament time. That’s why we’re really excited as a staff. … The experience for this team would be the greatest thing in tournament time – understanding and knowing it’s one and done.”

Players getting validation for buying in: “I was probably the most nervous out of everybody because I’ve talked to them a lot about that. I really wanted this to happen for them because of that.”

Having the chance to host: “I looked at the bracket and where people had to go, and we’re very fortunate. I hope our fans and everybody understands that it’s going to be really important that we have a good showing – that people come out and support us. They deserve it. They’ve worked really hard to get us to this spot.”

Trying to quickly prep: “Thank goodness for my staff and (director of operations) Laura Terry and the film people, trying to get us together. We really just learned what kind of basketball team they are.”

On East Carolina: “We’re going to have to guard. They’re athletic. We’ve been watching film and trying to put a game plan together. They’ve shot over 600 3s, to give you an indication. We’ll have the opportunity to do a lot of different things.”

More on ECU: “We’re going to have our work cut out for us, but on the other hand, they’re looking to figure out how they’re going to guard Govan and Gooch and the rest of our team.”
