The first of two Lady Topper updates coming today. As it appears on bgdailynews.com, here’s the update on the departures of LeAsia Wright and Mariah Sunkett:
Western Kentucky women’s basketball coach Michelle Clark-Heard announced Monday that freshmen LeAsia Wright and Mariah Sunkett will not return to the team next season.
Heard stressed in a statement their departures were not dismissals, but mutual decisions with the coaching staff.
“This season, LeAsia Wright and Mariah Sunkett played a big part in helping us grow our program back towards the level it needs to be,” Heard said in the statement. “In meeting with each of them after the season, as we do with all of our players, we agreed that it would be in their best interests to continue their careers elsewhere. I appreciate all of their hard work this season and our entire staff will continue to be a resource for them in any way possible.”
Wright, a 5-foot-8-inch guard from Louisville, averaged 3.3 points and 14.4 minutes per game in 31 appearances, including two starts. She missed the first several weeks of the season with a torn ligament in her thumb.
Sunkett, a 6-1 forward from Belleville, Ill., appeared in 15 games and totaled seven points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Toppers’ other nine returning players are expected to remain with the team. WKU finished 22-11 in its first season under Heard, reaching the second round of the Women’s NIT.
